Here are some of the most commonly asked questions in regards to Electrical testing.
What is Test & Tag
Testing and Tagging is a testing procedure undertaken in accordance with Australian Standard AS/NZ 3760 2010 that ensures your workplace has taken the necessary steps to provide a safe working environment, with respect to electrical equipment, and that your organisation complies with Workplace Health & Safety & Electrical Safety Regulations.
A physical test is firstly undertaken to view for any signs of damage. Following a ‘passed’ physical test, an insulation, earthing and polarity test is also undertaken on the appliance.
What items should be tested and how often?
Essentially any electrical item that has a power lead (flexible supply cord) and a plug top (240v or 415v volt power) should be inspected, tested and tagged.
Testing intervals vary in accordance with the workplace environment that the appliances are located. The below table from Australian Standard AS3760 provides a guide to testing intervals.
Does Personal equipment brought into a workplace need to be tested and tagged (eg phone chargers, fans etc ) ?.
The Regulations and Standard applies to all equipment located in a workplace or public place environment.
The safety of the equipment is the responsibility of the workplace / employer even when the item has been brought in by an individual to be used in the workplace.
Must I keep a record?
The regulations require that the following information is recorded :
- The name of the person who made the inspection or carried out the test.
- The date / date on which the inspection was undertaken.
- The result or outcome of the inspection.
- The date by which the next inspection and test needs to be carried out.
